Hello, noticed this post and I signed up to the forums just so I could answer this one question ...

I used to have this problem a while back and after MONTHS of searching ... I found the solution.

Since your on a wireless connection WINDOWS XP has a service that stops the communication every 2-3 mins for a few seconds to update the list, to fix this you need to do the following.

Click start menu.
Click control panel.
If it comes up in a format with 6-10 objects near the side should be an option that says switch to classic view.
Then click on administrative tools.
From there click on services.
Scroll down to the bottom and right click on Wireless Zero Configuration. This is the program that refreshes the list every few minutes. Click STOP.
If you find your internet has stopped and wont work, a restart will always work, or you can reenable this option.
NOTE: It only stops it till you tell it to start again or you restart.

Have a nice day guys, and it would be lovely is someone sticked this post because it is very hard to find this info.

I originally found it in the steam help database after a few months(it was a recent addition).

I'm having this problem but I am running windows vista anyone know if this will work for me?

Hey, I am sure not may people are having this issue anymore... but I know (for sure) why lag happens. It is due to the sound/keyboard driver: SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio, 5.12.1.5500. For some reason, when you stream video with audio over the internet, play certain games, etc. Soundmax runs a process called senfilt.sys. This process is the cause of the video lag, however there is no fix that I have found to correct the issue. You wont see this process running when you look at Task Manager > Processes, however you will see that the process 'System' is using up more CPU recources than usual. To see what exactly the 'System' process consists of you'll need to download and run Process Explorer... then right click on 'System' > Properties > Threads, and sort the processes by CPU usage while the lag is occuring. You'll see that when streaming video, the senfilt.sys process runs, and uses up precious CPU resources. In my case, 15% or more CPU usage, and I experience lag. You wouldn't think that would be enough to cause lag, but it is the cause... for sure. Uninstalling the SoundMax driver fixes video lag issues, however you will have no audio. To my knowledge there is no other Sound/Keyboard driver or update to fix the issue (If anyone knows how to update the driver, or an alternative then please share... but I have not found one that works on my system. I imagine that if you are running more than 1 CPU on your system, this issue might not be present.

Anyways, I just wanted to share, As I have been frustrated with this issue since I bought my Alienware laptop 4 years ago. Even though I don't know the fix... it's better knowing the cause than not knowing what the hells causing lag. This seems to be an issue only affecting Aurora m9700's with the SoundMax 5.12.1.5500 audio/keyboard driver. Below are my specs in case you are interested:
