Okay,
So, buddy of mine who is in the computer industry just mentioned to me that Microsoft's upcoming release of Windows Vista will require all game developers to stop developing games for Windows XP if they wish to develop for Vista...
Needless to say this came as shock and peeved me a little. I don't have the fundage to play the upgrade or die game (one reason I don't but Macs) Since my buddy isn't specifically a game developer I thought I'd come to you guys...
Is there any truth to this rumor, and if so, will current research of lag on XP games really matter?
Thanks,
likeagod

That rumor has no truth. You will be able to play XP games just fine on Vista
In fact, the two OS'es are very similar (and that's why MS is considering YET ANOTHER delay)... because right now there is no real compelling reason to upgrade.
But Game development should not be impacted....
only on the positive side: that is, games developed for Vista will easly port to XBOX360 and vice versa.. which just means more games to choose from.
As for any of Bigfoot's Products (even though they are not due out till this summer [so very soon])... we will support VISTA when it is released....
and LAG WILL DEFINATELY still exist in VISTA!
Out.

Tytus,
Thanks for the reply. However, I think I miscommunicated my question. I would hope that games produced for XP would run just fine on Vista. I was more concerned with the next generation of games.
According to my source, Microsoft is asking that developers produce games specifically for Windows Vista and to discontinue support for Windows XP or older versions of Windows. In other words, they are asking developers to develop games which will not run on any system that does not have Windows Vista installed.
My question is whether or not this is true.
I understand progress and all that, but it seems foolish that game developers would limit their market to only new machines and new OS's when most users, minus hardcore elite gamers who always are on the cutting edge of tech, will not upgrade for quite awhile.
Thanks again,
likeagod

I had not heard that rumor, but I agree, if true, THAT SUX!
Technically, I don't see how it can be a true... because games are going to be Written to DirectX 10 (sometimes called XNA). and XP will have a DX10 upgrade path.
What I have heard (rumor) is that DX10 will have native shader 2.0 support, and VISTA will use it heavily.... and that will mean running 3d graphics cards without shader 2.0 support will result in crappy performance... but that is the only rumor i had.

I can believe it , if it were true. Microsoft has ways to always coax their partners to develop for their OS platform by ways of incentives, and pre release builds for them to work on.
But, that's not the case. If clearly MS is doing this, they have to understand, its' the industry that will help drive it, not MS, even though they want a grasp on every god forsaken thing mentioned or named "computer" .
Clearly, I think developers will continue to develop for XP , but I believe though, and i think it's safe to say, sooner or later, developers will have to develop for Vista, because evidentily it will replace XP.
On another note... How about those network stacks in vista ;-) hope we can pray that it won't affect our game pwnge!

I have a new question: Does the KillerNic come with Windows 2000 support?
You see, similar to how there's no good reason to get Vista over XP, on my old box I never got XP to replace 2000. It can do everything XP can do... with the only exception being that some software MS bundles with XP that isn't bundled in 2000... movie maker for example... buy 3rd party software and you can do everything movie maker does on a 2K box.
Now granted, for my newer computer I bought XP. But since I'm still running 2K on the old one, and even still gaming on the old one when I need my new box for something important... I'm curious if KillerNic has 2K support.
Thanks.

(Vista drivers will be available at Vista launch time)

On the Vista side of things...
Are you using the TDI interfaces in the driver(s) and ( if so ) what are the benchmarks when running thru the Vista translation layer?
Side topic... any chance of getting a copy of the drivers...? Not source... binary is fine...

mlampkin,
We've not yet finished our Vista drivers (luckily, we've got 4 or 5 months to do that!)
