Let me give you guys the details and see if anyone has ever had the same problem and knows how to fix it.

Basic System Specs:
XP Pro w/ SP3
AMD Turion 64 Mobile ML-42 single-core(I am on a laptop)
- 2.4 GHz freq
- L1 Cache 128kb
- L2 Cache 512kb
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS SLI (x2)
((I rarely use SLI because I do not notice a massive performance jump and I use dual view, which can not be done when SLI is active. Again I have been doing this forever, so it is not the cause of the problems I am experiencing.)

Here is my problem: Every so often, in EverQuest2 and EQ2 only, I will get a TERRIBLE lag spike. It will totally kill my FPS for approx 10 seconds and then snap out of it and be fine. This happens routinely in 10 minutes (approx) and is VERY annoying. I have been playing EQ2 on my laptop for little of a year now with no problems until one month ago when this started happening.

I have a few questions/comments for anyone who can help!!

I notice that normally I run a total of about 50 processes with EQ2 (yes i know its a bit much, I need to clean her out but just bare with me) with 50 processes running my CPU erratically jumps between 15-40% (approx). When I start up eq2, it bounces between 85-100%. Which is odd.. I also notice that during my lag episodes, I can hear a fan RPMs in my laptop turn up (or maybe a hard drive spin??)

It is non-network related.
It is non-GPU related (I can kill my graphics in the game to min settings where I run real high FPS and I will STILL have the spike!)

Here are my questions:

1.) My processor is 2.4GHz, why is it that when i right-click on my computer, and go to properties to see my comp info, it says this:

"AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile
Technology ML-42
1.59GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension"

My concern is why does it say 1.59GHz? It is a 2.4GHz proecssor..

2.) Page File size, what should it be for my system?? I messed around with it not too long ago (I am pretty sure I set it back to what it should be).

Thanks for anyone who read this or anyone who can help!!

bring my laptop baaaackkk!!!!
:p
thanks!
Interleaving ADSL Users

Read this first:

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/interleaving.htm

Interleaving can increase your ping by 20-30ms, yes it's true, no BS

Ring your ISP to get it turned off, worked for me gaming lag much more capable now.

I dropped from 33ms to 15ms.

Lag Meter Vista64?

I can't get it working just comes up with an App error does it support vista?

Seperate Operating System for Gaming? DMZ It!

Ok if you have a seperate Operating System for gaming, or another computer, try putting it in the DMZ zone of your router.

Basically this makes it skip the firewall and go straight too the net. Risky but i find i'm ok on a seperate Operating System with nothing on it.

You'll have to give that Operating System a seperate Static IP, to do this follow these instructions:

(Copied from another Site, can't remember the Site tho)

To set a static IP address, follow these steps:

1. In the Network Connections folder, select the connection whose settings you want to change.

2. Use any of the following techniques to open the properties dialog box for the selected connection:

> Select the connection and click Change Settings Of This Connection.
> Right-click the connection icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
> Double-click the connection icon to open the Status dialog box and then click the Properties button on the General tab.

3. In the list of installed network components, select Internet Protocol Version

4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then click the Properties button.

4. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, select Use The Following IP Address and fill in the blanks. You must supply an IP address, a subnet mask (for IPv6, the length of the subnet prefix, which is usually 64 bits), and a default gateway.

5. Select Use The Following DNS Server Addresses and fill in the numeric IP addresses for one or more DNS servers as well.

6. Click OK to save your changes. You do not need to reboot after changing your IP configuration.

To get the correct information like DNS settings goto command Prompt> type ipconfig

This should give you the correct settings, there might be anotherway but i can't remember.

2Gig Of Ram Or More?? I certainly have learned some new things. My question is: I know that a slow hard disk will introduce lag into gameplay, so I was wondering if I were to upgrade from an IDE133 7200 rpm disk drive to a raptor 10K rpm drive will that give me a noticeable improvement? Theoretically it should, but would it be noticeable? Please let me know your opinions. Thank you all.
PS. I run with 2 gigs opf PC3200 ram. I actually have it overclocked to 211. I think this is because of two reasons:

1) I am a badass with a sniper rifle or rocket launcher

2) Having the lowest latency is really a huge advantage.

Of course I still lag sometimes (usually the WORSE times), but I try to help by limiting my games to 6 people or less to ease the server burden.

When I play on other people's servers I usually in the top 3, but rarely win. On my own server (even playing against some of the same folks) I come out on top most of the time (75%+). Some users say that they have 5-15 Ping when playing with Fiber Optic Connection.

DSL => Cable because Cable is a little better than DSL when not overcrowded but when overcrowded with users the performance will get way worse and DSL will be Better.

So Cable = Good but not Reliable , DSL = Good and reliable.

NIC :

The better the NIC is , the better it will be on the Game/Internet Side.

Specially if it has FNA for Offloading things like Firewall / VOIP
Programs from the Computer Processor.

Killer NIC did a very good job on this , creating a Network Card that offloads CPU Processing , has FNA and tweaks the packets so your gameplay will be better. Reducing Ping / Spikes to almost nothing and increasing FPS by a very good ammount. It completely destroys the Spikes.

Projects : Killer NIC.

Gaming Network :

Creating a Local Interconnection for Gamers is a good thing to do. It will reduce Hops / Traffic Congestion and will make the Gaming Experience more enjoyable.

By removing the Traffic Congestion it will reduce the possible Spikes and make the gaming faster.

Internet Side

Projects : Game Rail.

Gaming Platform :

There is a project made by Chinese Guys that tweak the game packets making you have almost no lag when playing with foreign people. It really reduces Lag to 0 , but it uses all your connection to do so... Making the Upload Requirements to be very high ( Almost four times more ). Still it has some Spiking but it is more a problem of Network Card than because of their system.

Internet Side

Projects : GG-Game and other Asiatic Starcraft Gaming Platforms.

Conclusion : By making a Combination with at last three of these things you can reduce lag to almost nothing. My advice would be to use all of them if you can .

On the Hardware Side you have Internet Connection / NIC / Computer and on the Software Side you have GameRail and GG-Game. Both ways are very interesting aproaches to reduce lag.

Links :

www.endlagnow.org
www.killernic.com
www.gg-game.com
www.gamerail.com

GAMERAIL???

http://www.gamerail.com/index.php?family=

Anyone seen or heard anything about this?? I tested in the condition where nobody was using the other computers on the network and in this case the topology is:

Gaming PC --> Linux Box / fileserver / router --> Broadxent DSL modem --> DSL port --> Speakeasy service

Gaming PC is running Windows 2000 on:
A64 2.4 GHZ / 2G / 7800GT
using the nForce4 built in gigabit

Linux Box is running Ubuntu on:
A64 2.0 GHz / 1G
using dual Broadxent LAN ports that are built into the H8SSL-i board (LAN one is running gigabit and the one to the modem is running at whatever the modem runs at, probably 100 mbit.

If other computers are on the network, they're obviously behind the Linux Box.

My understanding is that the largest source of user controllable lag exists at points where the speed goes from relatively fast to relatively slow. In my case this would be:
at the linux box where it goes from 1000 mbit to 100 mbit
and
at the DSL modem where it goes from 100 mbit to 768kbit

Presumably here the largest issue would be at the DSL modem because it's a much larger change in speed... this is normally the kind of thing that could be monitored and attributed to "client" by Lagmeter, but with my network topology, this is probably attributed to "network".

Now I'm not having huge issues or anything, just looking to optimize what I have setup. Removal of the linux box is a non-option, there are other uses of the Linux box that I need to have that box in the network for (squeezebox server, RAID array fileserver, etc...)

So now the questions:
1) Is there a way to monitor lag performance or otherwise diagnose the specific link between the Linux Box and DSL modem

2a) assuming the answer to 1) is no what steps in configuring Linux can be taken to optimize performance here?

2b) I've read a little about throttling network interfaces so Linux can handle the packet queues so you have a bit more control over priority compared to dumping it all in the DSL modem's buffer for it to sort out however it likes to. Any advice on how to best do this? I'm not shy of scripts or config files and the like.

2c) It is my understnading that if I do something like in 2b) that I should be able to have a more usable connection when my upload bandwidth is saturated (like when downloading WoW patches using their POS bittorrent downloader that will fully saturate upload bandwidth, choking off it's own download capability. Is that a correct assessment?

Newbie at this

Hey, I play online games alot like BF2142 and WoW (quit tho) and I also play Warcraft 3 frozen throne. I'm also using a VOIP(Vonage) serivce for my home phone. Typical setup. The line comes out of the wall and into the cable modem. Then CAT5 connects the modem to a Microsoft wireless router. The router has 4 wired connections which connect my Xbox360, Toshiba HD-A1(HD-DVD) player, my PC, and the fourth goes to the VIOP router that was given to us by Vonage. I have a single phone line connected to the VIOP router and thats all thats on it. I have two wireless laptops that are upstairs that connect to the wireless router.

I've had the VOIP for several months and even got online when I first got it hooked up and played some online games while my wife was on the phone and didn't notice any kind of issue with my connection. It might have raised my pings a little but nothing that was really hurting my "skillz" while playing online. Recently though I have noticed that when someone is making a call my pings are getting SLAPPED around like crazy. I connect to fairly local server and ususally get 5-20 ping. When someone is on the phone now it rockets to over 125 and, due to a server side setting, I get booted for the high ping.

What can I do to help with this situation? I really want to keep my VOIP since they only charge me $15 a month where Verizon use to charge around $50.

Anyone have some tweak that might help me out?

Thanks.

Major lag/ping spikes in BF2

I have a problem in BF2 where every so often (varies) I get massive ping spikes. I have tried all of the recommended fixes from the BF2 community:

shut down a vast array of unused services
no spyware/adware
no A/V, anti-spyware or firewall software running
updated punkbuster
replaced known-issue punkbuster file
no BitTorrent or P2P software installed

My setup is:
AMD A64 3700+
2GB DDR500
NForce4 Gigabit NIC (Also tried Marvell Gb NIC)
Windows XP Pro - on a domain (maybe a clue here?)
D-Link DGL-4300 "gaming" router - Gb wired connection
Comcast cable internet - 6MB Down 384K up

When I run lagmeter it shows that the majority of lag is client based (102 of 132 total lags/min.) but only if I monitor all ports. If I watch only BF2 ports it reports no significant lag, but I have yet to notice it in any other network related functions.
HELP! Is there a way to get lagmeter to reveal which ports are the ones being "hammered"? TURN OFF YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE
LAG REDUCING TIP #2

We all hate viruses, but anti-virus software eats up valuable CPU cycles that could be spent helping you frag your enemy. Turn it off, and free up your processor to focus on the game. Don't forget to turn your anti-virus software back on or run regular scans when not playing!

Now; I understand some of the logic behind it, and obviously running the Virus sweep afterwards helps get rid of some viruses...but there are others which seemingly can't be detected by Virus Scanners, that cause havoc to the PC. Occasionally, I've found myself needing to reformat the system which is a huge inconvienience when I need vital programs for Coursework and other academic tasks.

After further analysis; I've found many more online games are becoming vulnerable to viruses (such as Garry's Mod and Enemy Territory to name a couple).

So is it safe to shut down the Virus Scanner?

Okay i need some help troubleshooting my lag.

To begin with i am not currently able to buy / upgrade anything, however i can drive out to the person who sold me the comp and get the wireless nic replaced. I am using a dell p4 (2.4 ghz) / 1gb ram / 100gb hdd / 256mb card.

Since about 2 weeks ago i have been expirencing a frequent issue with lag, and i have replaced my computer / router. The lag is actually quite interesting (ill post screenies of netstumbler in a follow up)

At present i have winblows wireless zero config off, i use a ralink 2500+ wireless nic, actiontec mi-424-wr router, verizon fios 5m/2m connection. Im about 15 feet or so from the router and ill let you decide on the problem and the fix based on the netstumbler / lagmeter results. I ran Lag Meter just fine for about a week. Then I sent an anonymous email with my Lagmeter info to you and after which the program stopped working. I have a screen shot of the program here and would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get it working again. I uninstalled it twice with reboots and then reinstalled it to get this same error each time.

for the sake of BF2 and WoW!

After coming back from the college dorms (with the oh so beautiful T3) I find myself hating lag.

I have satellite internet (I know I know... ) but due to where I live, it's either that or 56k. Living with people in the house or apartment seems fine. You might think your room mate Henry does web surfing and email, and when in reality, he's downloading **** bunnies Five on Bittorrent and your sister is a itunes whore. But your ass is getting hammered in Quake 4

Well where am I getting at? yes, indubiously, it's the word we are afraid of... Sharing..

Gamers alike, we like to have uber bandwidth, and uber connections at t3 levels. But it aint happening in the real world.

So without further adeiu, here is my suggestions on keeping things at bay in the household of gamers.

- If you have to share, be sure to have common courtesy to tell your roommate/friend/significant other to stop downloading pron and shove the EULA and Anti piracy and 1800 RU LEGIT numbers. In other words , be forewarned of file sharing and downloading. if you have nice roommates, they'll get off for you, if not, unplug their asses off the network. Hey it worked for me.

- If the going gets tough, get your own connection - Now i know that for some you think that getting a high speed connection is costly. Hey but think about it this way. You guys are paying a grip for Cell phone, Internet is not as much and you guy would probably use it more than the phone itself. If your roommates are hogging it up with what i said in the previous line before, try getting your own connection. You know you can install more than 1 DSL modem/line in the house, and you can have multiple cable modems.

- For the tech savvy - if neither is the case, and if any of you have the admin and router logins, and assuming your router is advance to do this, try throttling the bandwidth to that friend of yours who plays too much or downloads. You can also set rules or permissions and settings for controlling all the traffic. In any case, some routers or programs can do this for you. you'll see then they'll be as pissed off as you are with the lag. but at least you can gank them out for more bandwidth! Touche!

- Wait till they finish - yeah i know, some of us have the attitude and say "why the hell do i have to wait for those f*ckers! " well if you want to have a good experience in gaming, just let your roomies and users fall asleep, go draw or prank on them, and come back and rock on with your games. it'll be a treat. Two for the price of one. Payback is a biatch!

- Play the same game together. - sometimes if you guys login the same server, and play the same games playing together on a raid or multi shooter will be better for you, at least then you guys dont have to bicker or whine against each other. Just be forwarned, you'll have people call you brokeback if they keep seeing you play with each other. hah!

- Make sure you're using some good gear - I remember one time me and my roommates used a crappy ass hub in the dumpster. turned out that the hub had bad ports. You get where im getting at. If you use ghetto or free ****, try upgrading, and spending some money. Make your roommate buy it if he's into games, but regardless, make sure when connection you're not using ghetto brand electronics. This way at least you'll know you guys are fine on your side

- upgrade to a better plan - better plans = better equipment in some cases, but also consider the plan in terms of speed. If you get a faster 6mbps download and upload for 20 more, you guys can definitely split the cost. Either way, games and pron will be faster.

- Say no to NAT ... and yes to statics or at least dynamics- NAT to me is crap. I can't go back to it. I can't deal with a fake 192 number like all those fake people in california. If you can get static ip's for everyone (i.e. look at DSLextreme 4 static package) then you solve a **** routing issue that is caused by NAT. Dynamics are great too, so long as everyone can get them. Otherwise, if you have to use Nat, just be sure to RTFM and configure and try settings out.

All in all, caring is sharing people, and it's better we frag and kill our virtual baddies than our roommates for this lag. If you guys have more helpful tips , post some more! love to hear it!

QUAD-SLI!!!
