Lag in World of Warcraft

Hi,

First, great web site you have here Tytus. Very informative. Gratz!

Now, on to my issue: I'm experiencing annoying lag in WoW. I see this as "stuttery", or "jerky" video movement mostly when I turn around, and in the worst cases also when I'm moving forward. Lowering WoW's video settings susbstantially can pretty much get rid of this issue, but due to my system specs I feel like I should be able to play the game at max settings. More on that later.

Now, I don't have this problem at all when I'm in the "classic" portion of WoW. It really happens only in Outland, and now is even worse in Northrend with the new Lich King expansion. Things also got worse after the 3.01 update, where Blizz raised the max levels of many video settings.

My first problem at this point is trying to pinpoint the source of the lag. I guess it could be my video card, my internet connection, or Blizzard's servers. Finding out the source has been rather difficult due to some conflicting data. Here is what I know so far:

- This doesn't happen only in crowded cities like Shatt. I see this when all alone in some zones like Zangarmarsh, Terokkar Forest, and some others. I guess this might indicate that the lag is due to my GPU.

- I've seen improvements when playing at different times or on different days. This would indicate net or server problems I guess. However, the issue never completey disappears, and some zones are always problematic.

- I've ran LagMeter, but it almost always crashes on me. However, the 2 times when it managed to run fine, it gave me the following average resuls: [75 server, 0 client, 25 internet] and [59 server, 2 client, 25 internet]. This would seem to indicate that Blizzard's server is mostly at fault, except that...

- ... other guild members on my server say they don't see any lag and don't have stuttery video. Also, I've tried creating characters on different servers (which I've learned are located closer to my home), and the issue was exactly the same.

I'm using an 8-core 3GHz Mac Pro, with a Nvidia 8800GT, and a 50 Mbits/second cable modem. I play the game on my Windows XP partition (because of better Nvidia drivers on Windows), but have also tried it in Mac OS X and the results were the same, maybe even worse. I don't have any anti-virus or other software installed, because I use the WIndows partition only to play games, nothing else. It 's a very lean install.

So, does anyone have a clue about what's going on? Shouldn't a 8800GT be able to run WoW at max settings, with 4x antialiasing? Or is it still not powerful enough?

Should a 50 Mbits/sec modem be fast enough? Cause it's the fastest I can get here in Canada, short of opening my own college campus and installing a T3 network.

If the Blizz servers are at fault, shouldn't other guild members have the same issues (unless they do and just don't notice them as much as I do)?

So many questions...

If anyone can shed some light on this, I will very much appreciate it.

P.S. although I would love to give Killer NIC a try, I need a card that also works in Mac OS X. Make OS X drivers, and I'll be first in line.

No Cure for LAG

Its been a while since my last post but I am here to vent about the ongoing problems i've been having with lag. Its been nearly 5 years since LAG first took hold of me and it just keeps getting worse. I still enjoy playing online games but not nearly as much as i used to and thats due in large part to lag. Games are just not as fun when you have to deal with lag ALL of the time. Yes, i did say all of the time. I am one of the best FPS players around and having to play my ass off every time just to get average scores or get beaten by others who have no business doing so is downright infuriating. I have tried everything humanly possible, everything that anyone can think of to rid myself of this lag but to no avail. And as I stated earlier the problem just gets worse every year. Is this really the future of online gaming? Is this what its become? The following is what i've observed during online gaming over the last 5 years and how its devolved from what it used to be, and not just for me but for many others as well.

First of all, online gaming is not about skill anymore. Not even close. Those of you who "seemingly" do well and consistently put up good numbers don't fool yourselves into thinking that you're awesome. These days, better connections often equal more success whereas those with crappy connections like me have to make more of an effort just to put up decent numbers. Secondly, ping does not indicate how badly one lags or doesn't lag. Back in the days when I didn't lag i could play on servers far away in other countries and although my ping would skyrocket to 150 or 170 i could still play with no ill effects whatsoever. Now, that is far from the truth. I can't even get a game at a local server (where my ping is 40-50) and not lag. In fact, i commonly get beat by players with 150 ping or higher. It seems like they can hit me with ease and its a struggle for me to hit them. Playing with lag doesn't make things more challenging, it makes things unbalanced, ridiculous and puts you at a great disadvantage. So many of my moves/shots/actions do not register to begin with and the ones that do register are delayed by a second or more! An average player with no lag at all would have the advantage over an experienced player with tremendous lag any day. What good is having skill when it doesn't register at all? The fact is that LAG dictates the outcome of every game and changes the complexion of it by disrupting our rhythm and timing. Every symptom of lag there is I've experienced to the nth degree in the last 5 years.

I wish i knew the reason for this monster LAG, but I am not certain. I suspect an increasing demand for bandwidth thats just creating more and more congestion on networking traffic. Back in 2001 when I first subscribed to broadband cable it was relatively new and not many people had it either because they couldn't afford it or it was not available to them. My connection was smooth for the first couple of years and I had no complaints at all. Lag was a distant notion that I never thought about. Unfortunately that didn't last very long :\ About late August, 2003 that all changed. Since then, things haven't been the same in online gaming for me.

I've tried several different things to fight the problem, too many to list here. One of the latest things i've tried was switching to FIOS service when i moved just a few months ago. I had a glimmer of hope when i read how good, fast and reliable the service was. To my dismay, the lag is still very evident online (even with speeds of 15mb/2mb) and I don't notice any improvement over my previous cable broadband service. I am reluctant to spend $1500 or more to build a new pc from scratch as i've done in the past with no positive results. As of now there is nothing I can think of that i haven't tried. I dread having to go through another 5 years or more with this lag

To begin with, I am the owner of a decent halo 1 & 2 pc clan. Bout a week ago i was playing a nice server with 2 of my clan buddies. Both have 8meg and i have 2meg (at that time it was more like 0.5 meg because virgin slow peoples internet down after a certain time.) Well anyway i was running round murdering my clan mates on this slayer server. Got to i had 18 they both had about 4 (about normal xD ). Then soemone joined. Thats when the lag began. Then 2 more people joined. After 3 min i found myself unable to kill anybody because of lag. I would run up to them. release 2 whole smg clips into and then melee them. and they would teleport around me and 1 hit me. it was painful as i always find it fun to own at online games. Its just when i get lag the server says i haven't even fired a bullet yet lol. I smashed up my logitec g-15 that time.

About a month later. Gears of war PC. I would be running along, hit a lagg spike and just explode as the server says someone shot me with an arrow when i stoped moving (cause of lag). I then would cry as this repeated. if i got close to the and shotguned em (should instantly kill them) It suddenly teleports me about 10 seconds back. THis is still a problem. First time this happened i punched my wall and broke 2 of my knuckels.

2 days ago. Guitar hero 3 Wii. PLaying with one of my halo 2 clan m8ts. We are insain at this game. We easly beat stan and kyle (for those who dont know who stan and kyle are i wil axe murder you when you go to bed tonight). Playing Tenacious D 'THE METAL'. Both getting constant 4x and powers. Then Bang. im suddenly missing notes and teleporting back through the song (this game is suposed to be one of the least demanding online games ever. It made the song suck. after that i found out my sister was on youtube whilst on msn with 2 webcams on and downloading from limewire. Overall she was using 256 of our 257 kbps lol.) I threw my wiimote over the room and shattered the backplate of it. got it seletaped on there now.

the worst kind of lag imo is when it lasts more than a few seconds. the little glitchy lags are really annoying, but they doesn't piss me off as bad as when the lag causes a game to slow down or freeze for multiple seconds or minutes (if the server doesnt disconnect by then). i've seen it happen when there's a lot of players on the server, a lot of players in one place, when something is going on in the background on my comp, but worst of all when it happens for no apparent reason. this kind of lag just pisses me off and makes me wanna stop playing.

how frustrating is it when you know you should be moving and know you probably are but just don't see it on the screen and start to wonder where you'll end up a moment later whenever the lag goes away, in fact sometimes i get pissed off and just smack the keyboard to see where in the hell i end up.

I've never experienced this problem, but now, any online games I play (e.g War3 battlenet, Maplestory), I start lagging heaps, I can't do anything in the game (e.g I hit a monster, nothing happens) but I can still see people walking around and talking and killing stuff. I think the started when I got Vista.

Any ideas?

vista wireless lag spiking

Ive just spent 3 days trawling the internet looking for a solution and have found nothing.

Remember windows zero wireless configuration in xp?remember those damned lag spikes every 30 or 60 secs. throughout your entire online gaming session?

im having those same old woes again in vista, only this time, i cannot simply select an alternative utility to connect to my wireless network, vista doesnt have that option.

I have downloaded raconfig version 2.0.4.0 for vista to go with my ralink wireless-g lan card V2, can connect through either the vista connection manager or the raconfig utility, neither stops the problem.

There must be an answer out there somewhere!

Hey, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I had no clue which one it would go in so I chose this. This computer and another computer on this network get serious lag. This one has Windows Vista and the other one has Windows XP. Whenever someone else is on a computer in this network one or both of the computers gets lag spikes non-stop from 100-900 ping. I use 256k DSL, and can't upgrade cos my mum wont let me. It still lags when I connect my computer directly to the router, I can only play at night when my family is asleep. Please Help!!!

I get mad when i play bf2 and its completely obvious its easier to kill me then me kill them when I have a download of 4500kb/s towards 55kb/s upload speed i've been trying to fix the problem but the only cable company i can get in the boon docks is adelphia and they don't have any higher services with more upload speed >.< but its amazing how i shoot and have a 1-2 second stall on them compared to them killing me within .01 of a second towards my at least 3 seconds of shooting at them before they die. Maybe you guys have some answers I'm not completely sure anymore.

Im currently playing Star Wars Galaxies (been playing since launch). My guild is usually in fights of 16. 8 vs 8 or sometimes more. Every guild of the aposing faction have noticed that when ever we encounter a specific guild (lets call them XYZ guild), we have major lag. Client/Server lag i dont know. But almost every time garantee's their victory. They have been reported several times but the dev's have nothing for us. Is there a known hack or is there something i can do to crack this mystery?

Hi there,

i don't know what the matter is with my System.
In 3DMark2006 the CPU testing DEMO with the desert is slow as slug, 1 frame per 5 sek.
On the surface of my vista64 it's all smooth and cool, no lags, no signs of horror.
But when i start playing a game, c&c3, test drive unlimited and stuff, it really gets slow.
Not from the beginning though. It let's me play for 5 min, then the lags start.
When i got 50 fps (60% CPU), it gets down to like 5 fps, and it's unbearable and of course unplayable. Then after another 30 secs it gets back to full speed and full cpu power.

What's the connection with that slow CPU 3dmark2006 Demo, the games that lags because of the CPU going down...

My CPU is 36C°, so it's not overheating. 46C° are my Rams.

My SYSTEM:
DUAL CORE 2 6400
2GB RAM,
Geforce 9500 GT 528MB
Vista 64 Ultimate,
300 GB RAM HDD,
Monitor 22",

Okay, I've been using Spring DSL for over 2 years now and have been playing games such as COD:UO, CS, MOHAA, and lately WoW. Untill the last week or so, my latency/ping has always been stable(around 50-90ms) with no lagg.

This last week however, I've been having horrible lagg. I noticed my latency/ping is now jumping like crazy, it will go from 60ms to 800ms then back down to 60ms(causing the lag). I called my ISP and they said my modem has gone bad, so they were gonna have to send me a new one.. I recieved the new modem today, I got everything hooked up fine(so I think), but it has not fixed the lagg. My ping continues to jump around like crazy and the lagg continues to keep me form playing.

So yea, I'd greatly appreciate any ideas to fix my problem. I'll probally try calling my ISP again later. /sigh

I was playing in a really big server (24 on 24) of Counterstrike Source last night, when Fatal1ty (or one of his cronies) who happened to have ops on the server dropped in for some pwnage!

(the server was a 24/7 Office Noob server)

Whoever was posing (or he himself) was very very good. And everyone on the server seemed to know him (and he did have server ops)...

I played till 1:30 in the morning, and killed him only once.... and I think it was because he was Lagging!!!!

We were in OFFICE and I was a T, camping in the corner by the Hosties... he popped his AWP around the corner and took out like 5 of my guys 1 after the other... I was out of FlashBangs or i'd have tried that.... instead I said, heck, I'll rush him!

I jumped up and ran through the doorway, leveled my Deagle at him, and he spun his rifle towards me....

at THAT EXACT MOMENT I SHOULD HAVE DIED!

Instead, I got three shots off with my Deagle and took him down. After my first shot, I saw his AWP swap to his own Deagle (AWP is not so good in close combat!). But he never got a shot. It looked to me like he was lagging all the suddent because he JUST SORTA FROZE UP (where he was moving fluidly).

After the round I asked if he was lagging, and got ignored (probably shouldn't have gloated about the Kill first)!!!

I was glad I WASNT LAGGING!!!

Do Client Side Hacks Exist To Lag a Server?

I live in Malaysia. Long long time ago, I am playing with 56K modem. I have a slow game in Ragnarok Online (Malaysia server) but never get disconnect.

About primary 6, my dad order a package from TMNet streamyx. The package is Basic 77 monthly price 77. Speed for upload and download is 568kbits/s. I thought the speed would really be 568kbits/s but turn out only maximum 48kbytes/s.

I keep confusing... What is the different between kbit and kbytes?

I think that speed still ok... At least not worst than 56K. But there's 1 problem, that's the DSL cable sometime cannot connect to streamyx server. I have contact streamyx technical support. They tell me to do this and that but it's still the same. My friend that live very near to me, he don't have such problem. Other friends that live near but not too near also don't have such problem. Then I call the streamyx to come and fix it. But alway still the same.

Later, my dad buy a better package. Package Basic 99, speed is 1 Mbps! This package is same as my all my friends. The problem still resist! I call streamyx again to fix it but they still can't fix it. I alway have to take lag went online gaming.

Now, my friends that live same area as me also have the problem. Some area don't have such problem. I contact the streamyx, they reply to me but I forgot what they say... I remember it's some things about their port.

Many peoples have complain streamyx but they don't care. Some other area have problem for few day can't connect to streamyx server! My worst lag is for a day and a half can't connect.

It's been 3 years! 3 years! I am suffering from lag!!! But we some Malaysian have no choice... Because streamyx is the one and the only boardband service in Malaysia...

I wish Malaysian can complain streamyx until they have no choice but the fix the problems... OR new boardband service come to Malaysia and save the Malaysian from lag suffering that cause by TMNet streamyx!!!

Worst LAG Ever!!!

Here is what is going on...all the sudden my gaming rig has start lagging ONLY while gaming online(Halo PC). I mean bad lag...warping terribly. But it happens so fast that it does not datalog on the Lagmeter to see the cause. The computer is well up to the task of running this old game.

2.8gig HT,7800GS Nvidia card 1.5 gigs of ram. I have tried EVERYTHING to figure it out. I have did a total reformat/re install,used 2 nic cards (tried even my Killer too..but if goes way beyond even it helping)

What so mind boggling,is I can take my other computer,use the same modem/router/ethernet cable and it plays PERFECTLY!!!!

I am up in arms trying to figure this out....any guess,clues,scooby snacks are GREATLY appreciated.

Qwest in Prineville, Oregon (USA) sucks

Alright, so to preface my questions with some horror stories... our DSL services here in Prineville, Oregon really sucks. We do have cable here, and while in some ways it is better (lag) it has very limited bandwidth, especially compared to what you can usually get with cable. That's why we've opted for DSL. The torture isn't always that bad... but granted there are a few things that suck. The ping is always high no matter what. I can't play online shooters hardly, most servers have such a high ping that it won't even let me connect to them. I can usually only find a handful with a low enough ping to play on, and even then its always above 100. Also, whenever I'm using any download program (or even downloading files off the web) you can't do anything else. I guess that's what I deserve for choosing to live in a small town.

Anyway, nuff about that, here's what I really came to ask. In the Lagmeter program, it divides the lag into three categories:
Network/Client/Server
My question is, what constitutes lag on my end? I assume this would be the 'client'. I'm not positive, but also would the network be what service/provider I'm using and the server be whatever it is I'm trying to connect to on the internet?

I'm mostly curious because after reviewing the data, it looks as though my suspicions of qwest lying or just being full of **** is true. That is, if what I said above is correct, there is almost no lag at all on our end, and its all on their side. But what do you expect from phone companies... they always tell you its your problem and not yours.

Anyway, thanks for the help! And good luck with the lag quest... I sure hope to see reduced lag in the future (but right now I'd settle for at least normal lag)!

Lagmeter causes me to lag bad, seriously

Hi,

Just tried the lagmeter on Halo. Running it made me warp like a bunny in heat. If I close the lagmeter and restart the game, everything is fine again.

My system specs:

Amd Athlon 1.4 GHz
512 Mb Ram
Win XP
1Mb/1Mb DSL-line

It was like being back on Wireless router. Skipping just about every other sec. Hard to get through doors or do timed jumps, not to mention killing anyone.

At the moment Lagmeter is totally uselss to me. Makes playing impossible.

LAGGGGGG in BF2

Okay, so I know BF2 supposedly needs 2 Gigs of ram...

i'm thinking about it.

But man, it stinks that I lag so bad in BF2, supposedly just because of Ram.

The game is really amazingly fun... i think it is a breakthrough game.

BUT THE LAG!

My ping is like 170 on the closest servers... and it ain't my network connection.

I tried this......

I connected to the BF2 server, wrote down the IP address.
Then I ran PING to that IP address from my command line.

I GOT LIKE 22ms when i run PING by itself.

But when I play in the game, it's 170ms to that server....

SUX, somethign is weird.

my friend has 2-gigs of ram, and never has such high pings....

Do High End Systems and Broadband Connections Hoard Server Resources?

If a player is gaming on a high-end system (top shelve processor, graphics card etc.) and is using a fast broadband connection, i.e. T1, T3, could that effectively hoard server resources and generate lag on the server? Lag experienced only on the oppositions end?

So after moving (my wife and I) our warcraft started chopping (serious fps drop), naturally I figured it must be something with our connection - that being the only thing thats changed. But I cant be sure, whos to say they didnt implement a little change in the game of some sorts.
I happened to stumble upon your LagMeter and figure it could pin out what the problem seems to be.
Only thing is, Im not quite sure what to make of the readings.

Ok so I don`t have a great connection (cable/shared with router) and my pc isn`t all that great as well, but I make sure that it fits atleast the minimum requirements in the games I play.

Now I don`t have much troubles with fps games, I mean I practically never lag in fps games but mmorpgs are a totally different story. Its weird though. Whenever I play mmo`s in the morning (europe) I have ABSOLUTELY NO LAG. AT ALL!! Its the best feeling ever. I mean seriously its such an weird sensation. But as hours start to pass, people start to log on and lag happens. So this lead me to think that the problem was not my connection or pc but it was the servers being all crowded and all.

So I figured nuking america would pretty much solve the problem but I couldn`t find an atomic bomb on ebay. So you guys got any other thngs I can try? I really don`t know what to do. I tried lagmeter and I can`t seem to get a grip with the results. I don`t really know what the result should be.

WOW Lag. (My Frustration)

Ya'll have surely tried LagMeter by now? I just wanted to share a recent experience I had while playing WOW.

I play on many different servers, and have many different characters (including Tytus on Draenor)...

Anyways, I was in Stormwind and having problems MOVING! It is about the most frustrating thing ever to be stuck in a city and unable to move.

I was playing on my friends gaming computer, and was curious why things were so bad! I exited, installed LagMeter (without his permission ) and discovered the problem immediately.

He had over 60 client lags. (frames per second drops). Network lags were fine.

So I told him his PC sucked. He said, no way man, this is a great rig.

We opened his box up and noticed his processor heatsink had popped off!

Fixed it, rebooted. My terrible Lag went away!

!!!!

So, check your heatsinks, and run your LagMeters, life is good again!

Lag in ventrilo / teamspeak?

This may be off topic but i've had delay problems here and there using vent or teamspeak, sometimes it depends on the server, but would you classify that as lag? ... and sometimes having the voice program open can cause lag in my games as well.. sucks that voice takes up so much bandwidth, yet so crucial to games these days.

Bad Client Lag and in-game Ping spikes over 1000ms

Hi all, I have been playing BF2 now for 12 months with no problems but in the past few weeks its now unplayable due to ping spikes over 1000ms at times, sometimes every 10-15 seconds that last for about 1-2 seconds.

I have never had any problems like this before, I have an average PC AMD 3.0 Ghz CPU, 2Gb DDR400 Mem, ATI X1600 Graphics, 2xSata(stripe) - defragged regualar. Well cooled. 10Mb Cable internet connection with Telewest UK. Linksys router and I still have same problem with only me on the router, so its not from outside usage.

I have done lots of anti-virus and anti-spyware checks just incase its a virus (clean), port explorer shows no unusal port activity.

So i came across that great little program 'LagMeter' and it said I have CLIENT LAG, so what exactly causes client lag?

These are just some of my results

GW vs. WOW... wierd result

Recently, while setting up my new system dual core, I accidently went into Guild Wars without turning off my virus checker or any of the other applications that I usually having running when not playing a game. To my surprise and delight the game ran pretty much without noticable lag and stayed at pretty much 60 fps for the whole half hour I played..

So, I decided to do a little experimenting on whether or not I needed to really kill all these apps when I play Guild Wars or World of Warcraft... I downloaded the lagmeter and let it run in the background while I played each game for about 45 minutes with my 'non-game' setup.

The results kinda baffled me in regards to the client readings. For Guild Wars I had absolutley 0 lag related to my computer setup. However, with World of Warcraft I had a result of about 30 or 40.

I'm willing to redo the experiment and whatnot, if it interests people here, but my question is why would WOW have a worse reading then GW in regards to the client? Is it because it is older technology? I don't think it can really be resource related since GW's minimum requirements are so much higher then WOW's...

Any thoughts?

After using the Lag Meter for weeks now,I have noticed that I have alot more client lag than I should think that I have.

I play Halo PC,and keep the frame rates locked at 30FPS. My computer is a 2.8 gig HT,1.5 gigs a ram with a 7800gs nvidia card,which should be MAJOR overkill for this game.

Any ideas??

BTW,can't wait to get the KILLER!!!!

I play warrock and i always lag! Its partly my computer and the game. I hate it! all my friends computers load it stragiht awa yand i miss half of a game becuase it takes so long to get in a game thne when im in a game it lags like hell. I think i need a new computer but im only a kid and i dont have any money. Anyone wanna buy me a computer? lol anyway I HATE LAG!

I get this while playing World of Warcraft, and it has caused me a lot of grief in BWL/AQ.
It seems to happen randomly, my connection appears to be stable with the server, because I can see everyone else fighting near my as they should be, but I can't join them. It's like blizzard doesn't want to allow me to upload to them. This can last 10-25 seconds, sometimes it smoothes itself out, but if it lasts more than 20 seconds I get disconnected from the server. Lets say I'm trying to heal the tank, my hands will stay lit up with the yellow healing glow for 10-25 seconds straight and I won't get a casting bar. However people calling out a bosses % on vent is exactly what it appears like on my screen. Nobody is warping around or skipping or running into walls which can commonly happen when someone is lagging. I'm not sure if the problem is on my side or not, I've tested it by leaving an internet radio stream open, and it plays flawlessly the entire time, no skipping or stopping. I also get no Ventrilo lag and have never been disconnected from it. I have a fairly old modem, I'm thinking that is the problem. Maybe I just need to buy a new modem?

edit: I'm using Comcast cable, and directly connected to my modem.

Lag & Performance: when Star Wars Battlefront 2 crawls...

So, I thought, yah, 32 players should be doable with SW Battlefront 2.

Piece of cake.

BOY WAS I WRONG!

Not only did it lag like a freakin stuck pig, it actually hit my framerates almost as hard as my ping.

So, my system:

3.2Ghz P4 HT
1GB Ram
ATI Radeon x1400 (badass)
7200rpm HD
Intel Pro 100

Allright, sweet right?

NOT!

Apparantly with all the graphics turned on and 32 players running around: my system dogged slow in the worst of moments.

Runs beautiful, most of the time, but as soon as the action heated up my ping would move up a bit (from 70ms to about 95ms)... should be fine. the my FPS would drop though... from a smooth 42fps down to 18fps!!!!

Wish there was a better tool though: all that measuring is hard to do to figure out what the heck is going on.

This one time in bandcamp...oh wait, I mean this one time in Warcrack, I was just passing time leatherworking looking for bears and tigers to kill when after spending 15 mins looking for animals near IF, I couldn't find one freaking critter. It was very eerie. All the players and characters in WOW completely disappeared. It was just me roaming around in the virtual woods by MYSELF. A few mins later I was D/Ced. When I logged back in, a friend told me she was experiencing the exact same thing except she was in an instance and all of the players were there but the monsters disappeared.

Was that lag or just a glitch in the system?
