Hello everybody,

First of all I want to say that I appreciate all the useful information I've found here regarding lag.  I certainly have learned some new things.  My question is:  I know that a slow hard disk will introduce lag into gameplay, so I was wondering if I were to upgrade from an IDE133 7200 rpm disk drive to a raptor 10K rpm drive will that give me a noticeable improvement?  Theoretically it should, but would it be noticeable?  Please let me know your opinions.  Thank you all.

PS.  I run with 2 gigs opf PC3200 ram.  I actually have it overclocked to 211.  Samsung UCCC.  No wireless.

I'm not saying this because it's my company, but because I am a gamer:

in FEAR, the BIGGEST difference by far will be a Killer NIC (or Killer K1).

And they can be got now for less than a new HD.

I think the HD will only help load times in FEAR. (but can reduce lag in other games like Lord of the Rings Online)

Thank you Tytus.

Just to make sure I understand.  I've seen reviews that the Killer NIC did not affect ping in FEAR correct? but your saying that there is a good chance that it will smooth out my lagging?  Just wanted to verify.  For me ping is not an issue since I get ping in our clan server in the teens.  Please confirm.  Thanks.

Well, i think you should run LagMeter and note what is causing the Lag.

But, Killer NIC does reduce ping a 'bit' in FEAR...

More importantly, Killer smooths out the graphics during intense action. In FEAR, a lot is intense action!

As for the HD speed, once the 'map' is loaded in FEAR, it doesn't hit the HD hardly at all.

Thanks again... I will try running lagmeter.  First time I tried it wouldn't open for me even though I installed 1.1.  I'll stay in touch...

We'll I still can't run lagmeter.  It won't even open.  I double click and nothing.  I did run a cat 6 line bypassing the router straight into my PC and that has helped with the lag.  I wonder if the Killer would help improve it even more?

Yes, as mentioned Killer just performs incredibly well with FEAR.

As for running LagMeter, are you sure it's not running (check your systray area by your clock).

It starts minimized.

We'll I can't seem to get Lagmeter to work.  I install it first then net 1.1 and viceversa and nothing.  I click on the desktop shortcut and nothing.  A bit frustrating cause I really need to know how much lag I am getting with my isp.  My clan plays in the TWL and UGL leagues for FEAR and I believe that I am bogged down by lag.

We typically play our matches around 6pm PST and I notice that my 5 meg down and 2 up connection drops sometimes in the low 700 meg download with about 1200 upload.  This is a source of lag isn't it?  How fast do I need to have my download so is not a problem with lag.  If I am wrong please let me know also.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

We'll I finally got lagmeter to run by installing net 2.0.  I am stoked about that.  What I saw was that my ISP is the source of the issue.  I averaged 17 lags per minute.  Here are the screenies.

What is concerning is that the second graph on image two shows the same poor performance with the Killer.  Is this correct?  Is it a bug?  Will the Killer not help me in my situation?  and is 17 lags/minute extremely high, average, low?  Please post your opinions.  Thanks.
