i've been running ok on ultima online (though sometimes hunk of **** lags) but EQ shards of dalaya private server lag like HELL!

i have 156 (i think) SDRAM (yeah it sucks) and my settings for EQ are turned all the way down. is there any setting outside of the game client i can turn down?

Sounds to me like you need an upgrade! Maybe a whole new PC! (Certainly a Killer NIC will help you)

However, I assume you would if you could so my best advice is:

Turn off EVERYTHING else...

CTRL-ALT-DEL and hit the task manager.

Then end-task on everything that doesn't say system.
