he rumor:
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/09/17/google-valve is that Google will buy Valve any day now. For gamers, this means your favorite program: Steam, which holds all your game logins and keys as well as makes it easy to buy and plan games, will get heftier and cooler. It also means LAG could become WORSE before it gets better. Google is set up for big things (like Yahoo), or slow things (like gmail), but for FAST things (like games) they could seriously slow your experience.
You see Google is defined by their VAST array of servers. So it is not crazy to imagine Google leveraging those for gameplay. The problem? Ever try to download a file while gaming at home...??? IMAGINE THAT ON A VAST ARRAY OF SERVERS... some serving up files, some serving up games.
Those 2-10ms you get from a Killer NIC may be well worth it if Google gets their dirty fingers into gaming! On the upside, Google people are pretty darn smart. I wouldn't be surprised if I have an email in my inbox asking for Killer NICs for Google Servers in a few days! :)
