ecently, it was reported that gaming is
supposedly slowing. While this is alarming for those of us in the gaming business, it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. If you do any surveys or talk to gamers, you will find that they are spending increasingly more of their disposable income on gaming related purchases. Why? Lots of factors: Price of Gas, Quality of Games, Awesomeness of latest GPUs and Gen3 Consoles, and Casual games. So, why the disconnect from industry folks like
NPD Group and the gamer on the street? And what is it that will (or already is) making gaming blast off? My thoughts… I believe it is Online Gaming.. Read on.
While I don’t have the answers, it is definitely a major focus of my attention. I believe I have part of the answer… Personally, I find myself spending more and more money on online casual games like
Duels and
Magic The Gathering Online. How much money, I’m embarrassed to say, but it is more than I spend on music, movies, and cable tv combined per month. I don’t believe NPD (the industry tracking group) can track that spend.
In addition to casual online games, I’ve spent a TON of money on Rock Band downloadable songs… this all adds up. I also spend money on MMO subscriptions (only some of which I play!)…. AND I BUY MY GAMES ON
STEAM!!! (Who doesn’t?) Does NPD track all that? I think not….
No, I’m not your average gamer, but I can say, this trend does not make me alone. Online Gaming is where it is at… who wants to play by themselves these days? Whats the point unless someone can see what you’ve done in the game?
What will make gaming blast off? It is already happening, and it is online gaming!
