orld of Warcraft is perhaps one of the greatest games ever made... at least one of the greatest MMOs ever made: and certainly the most popular! So, why then, you may ask, do we have to suffer with Lag in Wow? Why, when I'm roaming the hills west of Darkshire, with only 1 other PC with me: do I experience a full 2 seconds of freeze-up, and then come back only to see my ghosted soul, standing by the graveyard? Why? Especially when all I have is 1.5 hours to play, and I have to spend a good part of that recovering my body? Why?
The answer is complex... It starts with understanding, what we at ELN already understand: Lag is caused by 3 things: Client, Server, and Network...
ELN: What is Lag.In WoW, there is a lot going on here. Particularly on Client and Server. Network Lag is only at play if you're NOT on a Broadband (or your wireless router is on the fritz)....
So, Client Lag? Yep. Loading new textures from a slow HD, pushing pixels to your graphics card, etc. etc... it can make you crawl!!! And that is Lag!
What about Server Lag? We've all experienced it. Smooth as butter game-play, and suddenly: what? I can't move??? NO!!!!!! Yep. It's the server (or rather something at the server side of the MMO)... particulary in WoW's case a lot of blame has been pointed at the database server (although i'm not sure if this is true... it certainly seems plausible because I Lag from the server sometimes, when there is NOBODY around me....)....
How do I know:
LagMeter tells me when it's the server that's running slow. Why am I telling you this?
I want you to use LagMeter like I do. Submit your stats...
And I want us all to keep up the fight against Lag!
