ello from Hollywood! I’m finally done with E3. All kinds of crazy business and such (see my other Blog at
http://www.bigfootnetworks.com/), but what I wanted to talk about here was some of the amazing cool things I saw at E3!
So first, the games: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was fantastic. I got to play it against Fatal1ty and his cronies at their Fatal1ty booth. I pwnd them, well not exactly. I actually got to play them, and lost badly, but I did get 2 kills with my “wrench”, and that made it all worthwhile.
http://www.fatal1ty.com/events/?ID=34 Enemy Territory didn’t Lag at all. Why? Only 8 players, on a Gigabit Lan, all on EXTREME Fatal1ty machines, and the server no doubt a similar machine. 8 Player LAN should NEVER Lag, and it didn’t.
On to some other notable games: I spent a ton of time playing Huxley. 20 players. Very few AI opponents, and lots and lots of Lag! I suspect the main reason for this is that this build was a very early build, and the game isn’t anywhere near done. All that being said, I enjoyed it. The idea is solid! A real FPS game with an MMO metagame. I don’t consider this an MMOFPS but an FPS with an MMO minigame. That’s okay, we have to take baby steps towards full on MMOFPS that we all want (like a massive Star Wars or WW2 game!). And we’ll get there with Bigfoot Technology someday!
Meanwhile, I strolled along to look at Neverwinter Nights 2, looking beautiful and fun. Over at the NCSoft area, Tabula Rasa looks really really beautiful, but plenty of lagging going on. NCSoft took a bold move and put Austin players into the game as guides… that means we’re going over the internet, and it showed. Also, TR gameplay wasn’t what I expected! In Huxley, you aim, you shoot, you shoot rockets, it’s a real FPS. In TR, you aim, but you don’t shoot unless your target locks-on. It’s not an FPS experience.
WOW Burning Crusade looks beautiful. That’s all I’m going to say about the world’s best MMO ever!
I’ve got tons more to say in other blog entries, this one is already too long! Up Next: the Hardware at E3…
